Modern plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles that operate on a high voltage battery still require a 12-Volt system for powering control systems, body electrical systems, HVAC, interior and exterior lighting and accessories. In order to maintain the charge of the 12V battery a DC to DC converter is utilized. The DC-DC converter takes high voltage (360VDC) from the lithium ion battery pack and steps it down to precise low voltage setpoints that react to not only the state-of-charge of the 12V battery but also to ever changing load demands on the 12-Volt rail. This online course examines the DC-DC conversion as used on the Gen1 Chevrolet Volt and includes detailed system architecture as well as diagnostic and testing procedures necessary to ascertain 12V battery and charging system performance.

This class results in a certificate of completion that will be provided to the participant after successfully completing all online training sessions in the series. The certificate and its stated hours are eligible for NATEF annual credit and may count toward other professional development requirements.
